HOW TO USE ORDINARY DATA PLAN ON MTN BLACKBERRY!

This is a step by step guide on how to use an ordinary data plan which is also known as the Generic Data plan that i posted earlier on this blog for blackberry carriers and this is just for mtn subscribers, other network will be posted asap!
For MTN subscribers, you can choose from the various plans.
send 106 as sms TO 131 (100MB)/ one month!
send 105 as sms TO 131 (25MB)/ one week!
send 104 as sms TO 131 (10MB)/ one day!G
after subscription,you will receive a welcome message from mtn telling you the amount of data bundle you've subscribed for then we can get started. Now, punch the MENU button (blackberry sign) on your keypad then naviagte to  OPTIONS, under options, punch Advance options, then scroll down to TCP/IP then check the box to enable APN setting.
Input this as ur apn address.  web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net
also, check the box for apn authentication and put both username and password to be "web"
now, you can now try connecting via wap to download any application you want on you blackberry but here are suggestions.
for instant messenger. IM+ is a great application you can use to chat and you can add yahoo, facebook, twitter, g-talk, msn messenger e.t.c  all in one place and you can enjoy your chat. another application for chat is palringo, you can add almost all IM accounts same as IM+ too.
you can also set up your g-mail to receive e-mails! yes, you can receive your gmail e-mail right on your blackberry. you only need to download the gmail application and it will work without bis subscriptions. There is google map too which works very fine too and you can keep track of where you are.
also download the twitter application called (twitterBerry) to tweet and stay connected with your friends. twitterberry works just like the twitter application that bis service provides. another application for tweeting is OpenBeak. they're all cool and easy to use.
for checking facebook, 'Snaptu' is the best application to use, it works fine with a very nice platform. you can also integrate your twitter account to snaptu and enjoy!
For browser apart from wap that mtn provides, you can download 'Bolt' browser and Opera-mini, with bolt, you can easily stream youtube videos and surf the net with a very fast speed than the wap browser from mtn.
Opera also works pretty cool, you can download 4.2 version or the latest.
all this can work without BIS service. the only application you can't use is the Blackberry messenger for pinging and the e-mail services that is been covered by the BIS service.
Note:
- without the APN enable, any subscription for data will only work for mtn wap browser but for third-party applications to work, the apn must be enabled.
- If you can afford the weekly or monthly BIS subscriptions, there is no need to do all this! but you can learn this steps incase you want to try the ordinary data plan out.

other networks like glo, etisalat and zain subscribers can also follow same step if they know how to subscribe for the ordinary data package and the apn of the network they're using.

I will be discussing mostly on blackberry (RIM) smart phones, problems and how to go about solving them.

Also, I will like to share some nice and cool applications which every blackberry holder can enjoy, Softwares, OS upgrade, Accesories e.t.c

Another major issue I will like to share more  is the blackberry BIS/BES service plan which has been the major problem for an average Nigerian who wants to use the phone but couldn't afford the BIS/BES monthly plan which is about N5,000!

I will like to share on this blog how to use a blackberry RIM with a GENERIC data plan which is far lesser than the BIS subscription plan and you will still be able to use IM application like yahoo, AIM, Gtalk; facebook, twitter, and other third parties applications.

Then, you want to ask me, What is Generic Data Plan?

Generica data plan is the normal data plan which is provided by the mobile network to access the internet via wap browser/gprs or 3g connection. most generic data always have a download limit i.e you have a subscribe for a specific amount of data in MB. All mobile network in Nigeria (Mtn, Zain. glo and etisalat) has a generic data plan which is about N1,000 for 100MB for mtn, etisalat and zain, glo is similar too.

What is the difference between the BlackBerry data plan(BIS) versus Generic data plan?

The BlackBerry data plan gives you access to BlackBerry-branded software such as BlackBerry email, and BlackBerry browser, etc, as well as other enhancements appropriate to business. However, either kinds of plans work fine with third-party applications. 

What kind of data usage can I use on BlackBerry with just a Generic data plan?

You can use third-party software such as Opera Mini, IM+, GMAIL Mobile, Google Maps Mobile, BBWeather, etc. A lot of these applications are free. You just can't use BlackBerry-RIM-branded applications, but almost everything else you download off the Net into your BlackBerry works. Everything else you would normally use, such as phone, voicemail, PIM, SMS, etc, work perfectly on a BlackBerry. The main problem is how to get them installed on our phone without a BIS data plan and how to fingure it to work with just a generic data plan.

Note: This is not a kind of free browsing or hacking stuff, even if you are going to use the generic data plan, you still have to pay for a token subscription by your mobile network or switch to a pay-as-you-go plan to use the plan. All this are based on my research and have been able to use my blackberry Bold without BIS and it almost same fun! I will add more articles in my future post! keep your fingers crossed.
